HVAC for hospitals and healthcare facilities

In a hospital the ventilation system is part of infection control. We design and verify the airflow, filtration and pressure relationships that protect patients and staff in operating rooms, isolation rooms, pharmacies, labs and clinics, including while the building stays open during renovations.

What makes it hard

  • CSA Z317.2 sets air change rates, filtration, humidity and pressure relationships room by room, and inspectors expect proof that each room meets them.
  • Isolation and operating rooms need pressure that holds as doors open and staff move through, with alarms that work.
  • Renovations happen inside occupied buildings, so construction dust and pressure changes must not reach patient areas.
  • Aging air handlers, steam humidifiers and controls must keep running around the clock while they are upgraded.

Codes and standards we work to

  • CSA Z317.2 Special requirements for HVAC systems in health care facilities
  • CSA Z317.13 Infection control during construction, renovation and maintenance
  • CSA Z8000 Canadian health care facilities
  • ASHRAE Standard 170 (for reference and US-designed equipment)
  • National Building Code of Canada and provincial amendments

Questions

Can you test isolation rooms while the unit is open?

Yes. We schedule room by room with your infection prevention team and test pressure, air changes and alarms with minimal disruption.

Do you work on long-term care and clinics as well as hospitals?

Yes. Long-term care homes, medical clinics, dental offices and diagnostic imaging suites all have their own ventilation needs, and we design and test them.

What do we get after testing?

A report listing each room's measured air changes, pressure and direction of airflow against the CSA Z317.2 requirement, with any deficiencies and how to fix them.
